Remembering

Even before soldiers returned home, Tasmanians began to commemorate their service and the impact it had on local communities. They planted memorial avenues, erected soldiers’ memorials and installed honour boards across the state; not to celebrate war but to express the unbearable loss felt by individuals, families and communities. The memorials reveal communal efforts in planning, fundraising and construction and became the focal point of commemorative ceremonies for many decades.

The images in this gallery reveal the significance of soldiers’ memorials in Tasmania’s physical and psychological landscape.
